Voters say they prefer President Trump's support for reimbursing U.S. companies to rehire workers after COVID-19 while Joe Biden supports reimbursing state and local governments, according to a new study.

“Voters recognize that the overwhelming majority of jobs lost to the pandemic were lost in the private sector,”  said Scott Rasmussen, who authored the Workplace Recovery Alliance National Survey. “Relatively speaking, there have been very few layoffs of government employees. People naturally prefer a response directly related to solving the problem created by the pandemic and government-ordered shutdowns.”

About 55 percent of those polled prefer reimbursing businesses for their losses to rehire workers compared to just 22 percent who prefer new federal spending to preserve state and local government jobs, according to the study.

When asked, knowing that Trump supports reimbursing businesses for their losses to rehire workers and that Biden opposes reimbursing businesses for their losses, for whom would you vote, 41 percent chose Trump and 40 percent picked Democrat Biden.

“Voters always see more private-sector jobs as a good thing and are reluctant to embrace more public-sector jobs,” Rasmussen told the Washington D.C. Business Daily. “If the choice is between one candidate supporting private sector jobs and the other supporting government jobs, the private sector candidate wins.”

The study further found, before being informed that Biden is opposed to Trump’s preference of reimbursing businesses for their losses to rehire workers, Biden had a 10-point lead in the presidential election among registered voters.

“In our polarized political environment, I was surprised at just how big the movement was based upon this issue,” Rasmussen said. “That may be the result of some normally Republican-leaning voters who have doubts about the president seeing this as a reason to hold their nose and vote for him. It probably also suggests that the support for Biden is less than enthusiastic.”
